I grew
up around fabric, so to me, having bolts of it around are like having
extra spools of thread in the sewing room. Unfortunately, for my
family, they always find fabric draping over furniture, pinned to the
wall or stacked up in the stairwell to the basement. My guess is that
my two sons grew up thinking the fabric actually belonged there.
I have learned my lessons over the years…don’t buy the fabric unless you
mean to cut it and sew it the minute it comes through the door.
Fabric
shopping can be so much fun if you are an educated consumer. If
you don't know the ABC's of fibers and their qualities, it's a guessing
game as to where that fabric will serve its time best. Look at the
content, weave, care, hand, and durability. These are just some of
the factors to consider when buying yardage not to mention pattern scale
and repeat. Upholstery fabric requires even more research.

Custom fabric/trim/rugs are also an option.
This process is extremely rewarding and exclusive. Starting from
long wool threads in a myriad of colors, the trim and rug (pictured
above) were carefully arranged in a pattern that suited each other.
