About Nancy

Design...

DESIGN doesn't just APPEAR.  The process starts with a vision and that Vision is Expanded through layers.  Eventually design Evolves.   I call it Layered Design.  How we layer our spaces is a function of our unique perspective of what we desire and how we live.

Mocha poses on the bergere chair ( eBay) upholstered in family-friendly faux leather.  A hand- hooked rug is a wonderful backdrop for the neutral palette.

 INTERIOR DESIGN

isn't rocket science.  It should be a JOURNEY

that engages the entire family.  A home should

cater to its inhabitants....the people who live in

it EVERYDAY

Pillows are wrapped in a hand-pieced vintage quilt.  The retro     pillows (background) were made for less than $10.  The lime green chenille Scottie makes himself right at home.

PATIENCE…..Rarely can we find everything we need to create the look we want.  It could take months, even years, for a home to take on a personality of its own.

DISCERNMENT…..Sometimes a keen eye is all a room needs to bring it back to life.  It could be a fresh paint color, a brand new color palette for the upholstery, or solid cabinetry to hide life’s clutter.  What about layering window treatments or better yet…undressing a window?

DESIGN, either exterior or interior, begins with a foundation.  It's a luxury to have a qualified architect and designer aid the average homeowner in important choices such as choosing architectural moldings, cabinetry design, and ergonomic floor plans.  It's a challenge to work around something that isn't there as when important elements are missing...  What some homeowners unintentionally create is the standard version of the American dream.  It is no wonder once we inhabit these spaces our surroundings tend to lack color, interest, and most importantly - CHARACTER.  Resource books and magazines are  wonderful tools, but what they don’t do is help the homeowner adapt the professionally- appointed rooms in fine glossy print to the practical reality of today’s lifestyles.

This master closet and bath were designed with function and simplicity in mind.

A family- friendly living room.  EFFORTLESS and Simple.

Stunning results can be achieved by combining traditional and modern interiors.

Creating a Balance between the both, is key.

Adding Simple ribbon to pillowcases makes everyday linens

look inviting.

An antique chintz teapot placed on a metal table

offers Visual stimulation.

Creating custom cabinetry is an indulgence.

From conception to the installation of the last piece of hardware,

form and Function play a vital role.

Chairs are a fetish of mine.  I've had to create multi uses for them.

Wait till I start collecting retro chairs!

Nancy Jane's Notes:

Being overly creative in any room is a design disaster.  Spread your creative talent throughout several well-defined spaces.

Resist designing any room around current trends.  Trends come and go.  If temptation wins, try using trendy colors or patterns on small accessories like pillows that can be easily replaced.

If you are getting the urge to start refreshing your rooms, take time to  skillfully plan your transformation.  Attention to detail suffers when  impulsive tendencies take over.  Patience is the key.
